Scholarships
WAMNY awards scholarships to women from economically disadvantaged communities globally who work in the microfinance sector. Our financial support goes towards their leadership, mentoring and professional development in microfinance courses. Scholarship funds are raised through membership dues, donations and the hosting of special events. We are inspired by the work and stories of our scholarship recipients! Each year we continue to support the incredible work that these women leaders perform in their communities and organizations. To date, we have raised over $50,000 to empower these trailblazing leaders! We hope that you will join us in this life-changing initiative so that we can support more women leaders in the financial inclusion and microfinance space.
2018: NEW WOMEN NEW YORKERS
Regardless of where they are from and their level of education, women are more likely to be out of the labor force or underemployed. For immigrant women who are not educated in the United States this is even more disproportionate, one in three women are out of the workforce. Aware of this reality, and seeking to support immigrant women advance their careers, in 2018 WAMNY decided to focus their efforts to support women in New York and granted our scholarship to New Women New Yorkers.
With our support, New Women New Yorkers was able to start expanding the reach and scope of LEAD, its flagship workforce development program serving immigrant women in New York City. LEAD begins with a series of eight job readiness workshops, providing participants with critical knowledge and skills about the US job search process and workplace culture. During the first half of 2019, New Women New Yorkers was able to hold twice more series of the program, serving a total of 54 participants. It also offered monthly group practice and networking sessions in partnership with companies in a variety of industries, including a mock interview session at Guardian Life, a field visit and negotiation workshop at ZS, and a panel discussion with Human Resources experts. New Women New Yorkers has also offered this year more extensive individual support to its participants, including resume review, phone mock interviews, and career counseling.

Andares, Mujeres para las Microfinanzas, launched in 2015, is network of over 240 women in 17 countries in Latin America and 26 countries world wide who work in the microfinance field and seek opportunities to support the leadership of women in their sector. Today, women represent only 18% of Board Chairs in MFIs in microfinance institutions in Latin America and only 28% of CEOs. Yet the field serves mostly women.
