Posted by WAM NY Marketing Committee Ms. Nora Ajagjal is one of our 2012 - 2013 Scholarship winners! She lives in Kenya and works for Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance. Here’s what she had to say about her microfinance experience and WAM NY scholarship: “I come from quite a conservative family. As a young girl, I was sent to school to learn how to read and write. For [my family], that was all a woman needed to know—to be able to read and write. I was taught that the most important things for me to learn about are how to take care of the house, of the kids and how to cook.” “Living in these conditions, nothing was easy. Like thousands of other little girls, I had to struggle for every little thing, even if it is to go to a library to borrow a book after school hours. With almost no support from the family, I managed to pursue my education. The organization I work for focuses on serving the very poor in areas that are under-served in terms of financial services – mostly in remote rural areas. One of the goals of the organization is to focus on women because they are vulnerable and because experience has proven that the benefits of helping women to come out of poverty are far reaching and have a deeper impact on family and society as a whole. Thanks to the WAM NY scholarship, I will have access to a very good course on Business Development Services from the International Training Center of the International Labor Organization. A lot of small businesses fail even after having access to funds and what they often need from our field staff is the right advice. And this is what I want to learn more about so that I can transfer the knowledge to the field staff through direct training and course development. The scholarship will provide me with a great leap of growth and I thank the WAM NY community of women for making this possible for me.” Comments are closed.
