Here’s what she had to say about her microfinance experience and WAM NY scholarship: “I started my first job when I was 16, helping my mother sell ice-cream. From there, I started selling clothing and food on my own and, at the same time, studying at night. I had my first child when I was 18 and that made it difficult for me to finish university – my father no longer supported me. In 2000, I started working at Pro Mujer as a loan officer. Three years later, I became a branch manager and continued to grow at Pro Mujer from there. I currently serve as Manager of Operations at the national level. I have enjoyed every challenge, every position, every activity that I have taken on in this institution. The WAM NY scholarship supported my aspirations to undertake the Certificate in Advanced Finance will contribute to my professional development and provide me with greater knowledge that will enable me to design new projects based on a more in-depth analysis of profitability – that also takes into account the benefit to clients.” Posted by WAM NY Marketing Committee Ms. Nora Ajagjal is one of our 2012 - 2013 Scholarship winners! She lives in Kenya and works for Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance. Here’s what she had to say about her microfinance experience and WAM NY scholarship: “I come from quite a conservative family. As a young girl, I was sent to school to learn how to read and write. For [my family], that was all a woman needed to know—to be able to read and write. I was taught that the most important things for me to learn about are how to take care of the house, of the kids and how to cook.” “Living in these conditions, nothing was easy. Like thousands of other little girls, I had to struggle for every little thing, even if it is to go to a library to borrow a book after school hours. With almost no support from the family, I managed to pursue my education. The organization I work for focuses on serving the very poor in areas that are under-served in terms of financial services – mostly in remote rural areas. One of the goals of the organization is to focus on women because they are vulnerable and because experience has proven that the benefits of helping women to come out of poverty are far reaching and have a deeper impact on family and society as a whole. Thanks to the WAM NY scholarship, I will have access to a very good course on Business Development Services from the International Training Center of the International Labor Organization. A lot of small businesses fail even after having access to funds and what they often need from our field staff is the right advice. And this is what I want to learn more about so that I can transfer the knowledge to the field staff through direct training and course development. The scholarship will provide me with a great leap of growth and I thank the WAM NY community of women for making this possible for me.” Posted by WAM NY Marketing Committee Ms. Aumaua Fau is one of our 2012 WAM NY Scholarship winners! She lives in Samoa and works for SPBD Microfinance. Aumaua include the following in her testimonial about the WANY NY scholarship: “I have been working at SPBD for about 7 years. I work as team leader and supervise 4 loan officers who go out to the field and provide service in the community. SPBD provides services – small loans, insurance and savings – to poor women around the country. Most villages are covered by our services, with some villages having 2-3 SPBD centers. Our organization helps women start small businesses to increase their family income and improve their standard of living. Our services also help women fund their children’s education, as well as make improvements to their house or place of living. Through the WAM NY scholarship, I learned more about other microfinance practices so that I could improve both my personal understanding and our organization’s services.Thank you to WAM NY for this opportunity!” |
